PROJECT 2

The Premise

We follow a character around the world—but it is a man we never actually see. Instead, we are always trailing just behind his journey, meeting people that he has recently encountered, learning about him as we go.

We move from segment to segment, each one by a different director, each one offering a different aesthetic and interpretation.

A central object belonging to our unseen character—perhaps a letter, a suitcase or a backpack—passes from hand to hand, from country to country, tying the scenes together. Each filmmaker will have the freedom to explore his or her own creative instincts inside a simple framework. The film will be filled with personal and cultural variety, yet will be grounded by a central thread.

Your Role as Collaborator

If you decide to join us, you will write and direct one scene or sequence (2-4 minutes) of the feature. It can be about anything you want and should show off your strengths and your own style. It should be something you can do in one or two shooting days on a no-budget level. Your scene will connect to the previous and following scenes and will need to incorporate the central prop, as well as some themes and details about our off-screen main character.

We will spend March and April brainstorming ideas and writing our scripts online, giving each other feedback and suggestions. In May, we will begin casting and coordinating our shoots. Those filmmakers who stay on schedule and whose scripts are liked by the group will then go into pre-production.

We will stagger the shoots from June through August. You’ll edit your own scene and then pass your footage on to a central editor who will compile all the scenes together. The goal is to complete post in October or November.

The Finished Film

Once completed, we will submit the film to festivals and pursue distributors, but our main promotion muscle will be ourselves. With dozens of us to promote the film in our local areas, we can debut the film in multiple markets to a global audience. The unique story behind the process--an international group of filmmakers collaborating online-- should help draw press, audiences and distributor attention.
